Una Neighborhood Association Unveils Marker

I was able to attend the event for the historical project that led to the marker being placed in the UNA area of our community. Another congratulations to everyone in Una.

The News Beacon reports (some exerpts):

An official Tennessee Historical Society Marker now tells the world passing throught Una about the village's heritage. Sunday, June 29, 2008 was a special and historical event in the Una community. The Una Neighborhood Association aided by Mayor Karl Dean and Councilmember Vivian Wilhoite, unveiled and dedicated the Una Historical Marker erected on the property of Ms. Myra Ellis. "It was a day that truly turned out to be a beautiful one, event-wise and weather-wise after heavy rain and thunderstorms from the previous night and cloudy skies that lead right up to noon day on Sunday, "says Bettye Ensor Smith. Ten year-old Torri, daughter of Steve and Alice Burris provided greetings to the 40 plus attendees that included Representative Janis Sontany, who surprised Jan Cain, Una Historian, with a proclamation honoring her for her efforts of researching Una's history. Council lady Wilhoite stated that she was very pleased that Jan Cain accepted the easy challenge to work with the Metro Historical Commission and Board to help compose the language for the Historical Marker. Ann Roberts stated "This community made our job easy to preserve some of Nashville's precious history. Mayor Karl Dean commended Councilmember Wilhoite and the community for keeping in step with one of his priorities of making neighborhoods safer. He also took a moment to talk about Metro's 1.58 billion budget that recently passed the Metro Council. In addition to District 29 residents and representatives from district associations and watch groups, others in attendance were Ann Roberts, Executive Director of the Historical Commission; Councilmembers Emily Evans, Parker Toler and Duane Dominy; former councilmember Durwood Hall; School board member Karen Johnson; Juvenile Court Clerk Vic Lineweaver and various Metro department heads. The UNA Historical Marker is located at the corner of Smith Springs and Old Murfreesboro Roads.
