Smith Springs Water Main Replacement Project11-WG-78
This project is scheduled to commence on April 15, 2013 and will take approximately 4 months to complete (barring any unforeseen circumstances and / or weather). Metro Water Service’s contractor will work diligently to minimize disruption as much as possible to the area while protecting the environment. Traffic control will include a combination of flagging, police officers, project signs, message boards and detours as required by the Department of Public Works.
The Smith Springs water main replacement project is a capital improvement project funded by Metro Water Services. This project will replace approximately 5,500 feet of old 8 inch cast iron water main with a new 12 inch ductile iron main including appurtenances such as valves, fire hydrants, water services, etc. The limits of the project are shown below.
The old 8 inch main is part of an older utility district that Metro Water Services acquired decades ago. This main has experienced 21 breaks in the past 15 years with over a half of them (12 breaks) occurring in the past 5 years. This project will complete an improved 12 inch water main distribution loop throughout the local area, replacing the last segment of older 8 inch main still in service. Replacement of this main will not only provide more reliable water service for the local area but will also enhance fire protection. Five hydrants will be installed in this project. One is a replacement hydrant and four are new hydrants.
