"It's bad when you go down Anderson Road or Smith Springs Road and you see a different car for sale every day or every week," said Mike Hassell, who lives in the Antioch area.
Homeowners like Hassell have complained that the yard car sales are an eyesore. He said while he understands people are trying to make money, he fears depreciating property value as a result.
"It's just frustrating. They don't have a license to sell cars, and it's just not good for our neighborhood," Hassell said. "I'm just concerned about our neighborhood, to be very truthful with you.”
Metro Councilwoman Karen Johnson listened to those complaints and others. She led the effort to make it illegal to sell a car on residential lawns along major Nashville arteries.
Johnson said she saw a gray area in Metro Codes ordinances surrounding illegal residential parking and wanted to clarify that parking cars for the purpose of selling would be a codes violation.
"This is primarily for residential properties to remain residential and not be used as de facto car lots," Johnson said. “The ordinance passed Metro Council unanimously on third reading and without opposition throughout the committee process.”
However, some residents told Channel 4 it should be up to the homeowner to decide what he or she can sell on their property.
"I have no problem with them sitting in the front yard as long as it doesn't look like junk," said Ronald Lee, who has lived in Antioch for 22 years.
But Johnson and others in the area say they're all affected by the look.
"The more it festered, the more it created de facto car lots, and that results in visual blight in residential areas," Johnson said. "This will clear up that gray area in the codes, so we don't see that trend continuing to grow. And we don't see the visual blight along those major corridors."
The Metro Codes Department can issue citations if violators are independently spotted or reported.
